- Peroxisome proliferators include hypolipidemic drugs,nherbicides, leukotriene antagonists, and plasticizers; this termnarises because they induce an increase in the size and number ofnperoxisomes. Peroxisomes are subcellular organelles found in plantsnand animals that contain enzymes for respiration and forncholesterol and lipid metabolism. The action of peroxisomenproliferators is thought to be mediated via specific receptors,ncalled PPARs, which belong to the steroid hormone receptornsuperfamily. PPARs affect the expression of target genes involvednin cell proliferation, cell differentiation and in immune andninflammation responses. Three closely related subtypes (alpha,nbeta/delta, and gamma) have been identified. This gene encodes thensubtype PPAR-alpha, which is a nuclear transcription factor.nMultiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have beenndescribed for this gene, although the full-length nature of onlyntwo has been determined.
