The protein encoded by this gene belongs to thensubtilisin-like proprotein convertase family. The members of thisnfamily are proprotein convertases that process latent precursornproteins into their biologically active products. This encodednprotein is a calcium-dependent serine endoprotease that can cleavenprecursor protein at their paired basic amino acid processingnsites. Some of its substrates are - transforming growth factor betanrelated proteins, proalbumin, and von Willebrand factor. This genenis thought to play a role in tumor progression. Alternativelynspliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have beennidentified.
