- Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathionenS-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families. Atnpresent, eight distinct classes of the soluble cytoplasmicnmammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha,nkappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta and zeta. This gene encodes anglutathione S-transferase that belongs to the mu class. The munclass of enzymes functions in the detoxification of electrophilicncompounds, including carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmentalntoxins and products of oxidative stress, by conjugation withnglutathione. The genes encoding the mu class of enzymes arenorganized in a gene cluster on chromosome 1p13.3 and are known tonbe highly polymorphic. These genetic variations can change annindividual's susceptibility to carcinogens and toxins as well asnaffect the toxicity and efficacy of certain drugs. Diversificationnof these genes has occurred in regions encoding substrate-bindingndomains, as well as in tissue expression patterns, to accommodatenan increasing number of foreign compounds.
