Mecamylamine HCI (Inversine) is a secondary amine acting as an antagonist on neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). The blocking action of mecamylamine is exerted on all native subtypes of nAChRs despite their different subunit composition. Mecamylamine readily blocks most of the physiological, behavioral, and reinforcing effects of nicotine, therefore it has become the most commonly used of all neuronal nAChR-specific inhibitors in basic nicotine research and has been reported to be effective as an aid to smoking cessation.
