CD81 is a protein encoded by the CD81 gene. CD81 is localised to the cell membrane. It is involved in the B-cell receptor signalling pathway, IL-2 pathway and class I MHC mediated antigen processing and presentation. It is a cell-surface protein that is characterized by the presence of four hydrophobic domains. The protein mediates signal transduction events that play a role in the regulation of cell development, activation, growth and motility. This protein also appears to promote muscle cell fusion and support myotube maintenance. CD81 is expressed in the nervous system, lung, skin, liver and lymph node. Mutations in the CD81 gene may result in immunodeficiency. STJ96759 was affinity-purified from rabbit antiserum by affinity-chromatography using epitope-specific immunogen. This polyclonal antibody detects endogenous levels of CD81 protein.
