Isopropylthio-β-galactoside (IPTG) is an effective inducer of β-galactosidase activity and it remains stable in bacteria metabolism. If IPTG is added together with X-gal into culture medium, based on the α-complementation of β-galactosidase, recombinant clones can be easily identified upon whether white colonies are observed. In addition, IPTG can also serve as an inducer of protein expression in lac or tac promoter -regulated expression vectors.
