Selective inhibitor of eukaryotic protein synthesis, blocking tRNA binding and release from ribosomes. Induces apoptosis in a variety of transformed and normal cell lines, including T-cells. Antibiotic and antifungal agent. Inhibits transcriptional induction of autophagy genes, possibly by influencing the transcription factor E2F1.
