K29R ubiquitin, in which Lys29 has been mutated to arginine, is unable to form multi-ubiquitin chains via Lys29 linkages with other ubiquitin molecules, while preserving the ability to form an active thioester at the C-terminus and, therefore, the ability of K29R ubiquitin to be transferred to the lysines of substrate proteins.
