- This gene encodes a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase.nMitochondrial ATP synthase catalyzes ATP synthesis, utilizing annelectrochemical gradient of protons across the inner membranenduring oxidative phosphorylation. ATP synthase is composed of twonlinked multi-subunit complexes: the soluble catalytic core, F1, andnthe membrane-spanning component, Fo, comprising the proton channel.nThis gene encodes the subunit s, also known as factor B, of thenproton channel. This subunit is necessary for the energyntransduction activity of the ATP synthase complexes. Alternativelynspliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have beennidentified.
