- Iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters are necessary for severalnmitochondrial enzymes and other subcellular compartment proteins.nThey contain sulfur and iron, and are created via several stepsnthat include cysteine desulfurases, iron donors, chaperones, andnscaffold proteins. This gene encodes the two isomeric forms, ISCU1nand ISCU2, of the Fe-S cluster scaffold protein. Mutations in thisngene have been found in patients with myopathy with severe exercisenintolerance and myoglobinuria.
