- This gene encodes a protein thought to participate innprogrammed cell death. Studies using mouse cells have shown thatnoverexpression of this protein can block apoptosis. In addition,nthe product of this gene binds to the product of the PDCD6 gene, anprotein required for apoptosis, in a calcium-dependent manner. Thisngene product also binds to endophilins, proteins that regulatenmembrane shape during endocytosis. Overexpression of this genenproduct and endophilins results in cytoplasmic vacuolization, whichnmay be partly responsible for the protection against cell death.nSeveral alternatively spliced transcript variants encodingndifferent isoforms have been found for this gene.
