- Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specificnand ubiquitous. The former class is also callednphylogenetically-restricted crystallins. The latter classnconstitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens and maintainsnthe transparency and refractive index of the lens. This genenencodes a taxon-specific crystallin protein that binds NADPH andnhas sequence similarity to bacterial ornithine cyclodeaminases. Thenencoded protein does not perform a structural role in lens tissue,nand instead it binds thyroid hormone for possible regulatory orndevelopmental roles. Mutations in this gene have been associatednwith autosomal dominant non-syndromic deafness. Multiplenalternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for thisngene.
