- This gene belongs to the subfamily of ubiquitouslynexpressed heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs). ThenhnRNPs are RNA-binding proteins and they complex with heterogeneousnnuclear RNA (hnRNA). These proteins are associated with pre-mRNAsnin the nucleus and appear to influence pre-mRNA processing andnother aspects of mRNA metabolism and transport. While all of thenhnRNPs are present in the nucleus, some seem to shuttle between thennucleus and the cytoplasm. The hnRNP proteins have distinct nucleicnacid binding properties. The protein encoded by this gene has fournrepeats of quasi-RNA recognition motif (RRM) domains that bindnRNAs. This protein binds to the intronic polypyrimidine tracts thatnrequires pre-mRNA splicing and acts via the protein degradationnubiquitin-proteasome pathway. It may also promote the binding of U2nsnRNP to pre-mRNAs. This protein is localized in the nucleoplasmnand it is also detected in the perinucleolar structure.nAlternatively spliced transcript variants encoding differentnisoforms have been described.
