- Molybdenum cofactor biosynthesis is a conserved pathwaynleading to the biological activation of molybdenum. The proteinnencoded by this gene is involved in this pathway. This gene wasnoriginally thought to produce a bicistronic mRNA with the potentialnto produce two proteins (MOCS1A and MOCS1B) from adjacent opennreading frames. However, only the first open reading frame (MOCS1A)nhas been found to encode a protein from the putative bicistronicnmRNA, whereas additional splice variants, whose full-length naturesnhave yet to be determined, are likely to produce a fusion betweennthe two open reading frames. This gene is defective in patientsnwith molybdenum cofactor deficiency, type A. A related pseudogenenhas been identified on chromosome 16.
