- This gene product is one of several closely relatednmitochondrial-membrane carrier proteins that shuttle substratesnbetween cytosol and the intramitochondrial matrix space. Thisnprotein mediates the transport of acylcarnitines into mitochondrialnmatrix for their oxidation by the mitochondrial fattynacid-oxidation pathway. Mutations in this gene are associated withncarnitine-acylcarnitine translocase deficiency, which can cause anvariety of pathological conditions such as hypoglycemia, cardiacnarrest, hepatomegaly, hepatic dysfunction and muscle weakness, andnis usually lethal in new born and infants.
