- Plastins are a family of actin-binding proteins that arenconserved throughout eukaryote evolution and expressed in mostntissues of higher eukaryotes. In humans, two ubiquitous plastinnisoforms (L and T) have been identified. Plastin 1 (otherwise knownnas Fimbrin) is a third distinct plastin isoform which isnspecifically expressed at high levels in the small intestine. The Lnisoform is expressed only in hemopoietic cell lineages, while the Tnisoform has been found in all other normal cells of solid tissuesnthat have replicative potential (fibroblasts, endothelial cells,nepithelial cells, melanocytes, etc.). However, L-plastin has beennfound in many types of malignant human cells of non-hemopoieticnorigin suggesting that its expression is induced accompanyingntumorigenesis in solid tissues.
