- Neuropeptide Y (NPY; MIM 162640) is one of the mostnabundant neuropeptides in the mammalian nervous system and exhibitsna diverse range of important physiologic activities, includingneffects on psychomotor activity, food intake, regulation of centralnendocrine secretion, and potent vasoactive effects on thencardiovascular system. Two major subtypes of NPY (Y1 and Y2) havenbeen defined by pharmacologic criteria. NPY receptors, such asnNPY1R, have been identified in a variety of tissues, includingnbrain, spleen, small intestine, kidney, testis, placenta, andnaortic smooth muscle (Herzog et al., 1992 [PubMedn1321422]).
