- The Golgi apparatus, which participates in glycosylationnand transport of proteins and lipids in the secretory pathway,nconsists of a series of stacked cisternae (flattened membranensacs). Interactions between the Golgi and microtubules are thoughtnto be important for the reorganization of the Golgi after itnfragments during mitosis. The protein encoded by this gene is anmember of the golgin family of proteins, whose members localize tonthe Golgi. This gene is found in a large, low copy repeat sequencenor duplicon that is found in multiple copies, that are greathernthan 90% similar, on chromosome 15. Duplicons are associated withndeletions, inversions and other chromosome rearrangements thatnunderlie genomic disease. The protein encoded by this gene isnthought to be a functional golgin protein while the majority of thenrelated copies of this gene are thought to be transcribednpseudogenes.
