- The protein encoded by this gene is a member of thensuperfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABCnproteins transport various molecules across extra- andnintra-cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven distinctnsubfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). Thisnprotein is a member of the MRP subfamily which is involved innmulti-drug resistance. This protein is thought to formnATP-sensitive potassium channels in cardiac, skeletal, and vascularnand non-vascular smooth muscle. Protein structure suggests a rolenas the drug-binding channel-modulating subunit of thenextrapancreatic ATP-sensitive potassium channels. No disease hasnbeen associated with this gene thus far. Alternative splicing ofnthis gene results in several products, two of which result fromndifferential usage of two terminal exons and one of which resultsnfrom exon deletion.
