- This gene encodes retinoic acid receptor beta, a member ofnthe thyroid-steroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclearntranscriptional regulators. This receptor localizes to thencytoplasm and to subnuclear compartments. It binds retinoic acid,nthe biologically active form of vitamin A which mediates cellularnsignalling in embryonic morphogenesis, cell growth andndifferentiation. It is thought that this protein limits growth ofnmany cell types by regulating gene expression. The gene was firstnidentified in a hepatocellular carcinoma where it flanks anhepatitis B virus integration site. The gene expresses at least twontranscript variants; one additional transcript has been described,nbut its full length nature has not been determined. [provided bynRefSeq].
