- The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SACndomain-containing protein gene family. The SAC domain,napproximately 400 amino acids in length and consisting of sevennconserved motifs, has been shown to possess phosphoinositidenphosphatase activity. The yeast homolog, Sac1p, is involved in thenregulation of various phosphoinositides, and affects diversencellular functions such as actin cytoskeleton organization, Golginfunction, and maintenance of vacuole morphology. Membrane-boundnphosphoinositides function as signaling molecules and play a keynrole in vesicle trafficking in eukaryotic cells. Mutations in thisngene have been associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, typen4J.
