- This gene encodes a serine protease that functions as ancomponent of the lectin pathway of complement activation. Thencomplement pathway plays an essential role in the innate andnadaptive immune response. The encoded protein is synthesized as anzymogen and is activated when it complexes with the pathogennrecognition molecules of lectin pathway, the mannose-binding lectinnand the ficolins. This protein is not directly involved inncomplement activation but may play a role as an amplifier ofncomplement activation by cleaving complement C2 or by activatingnanother complement serine protease, MASP-2. The encoded protein isnalso able to cleave fibrinogen and factor XIII and may may beninvolved in coagulation. A splice variant of this gene which lacksnthe serine protease domain functions as an inhibitor of thencomplement pathway. Alternate splicing results in multiplentranscript variants.
