- Azurophil granules, specialized lysosomes of thenneutrophil, contain at least 10 proteins implicated in the killingnof microorganisms. The protein encoded by this gene is an azurophilngranule antibiotic protein, with monocyte chemotactic andnantibacterial activity. It is also an important multifunctionalninflammatory mediator. This encoded protein is a member of thenserine protease gene family but it is not a serine proteinase,nbecause the active site serine and histidine residues are replaced.nThe genes encoding this protein, neutrophil elastase 2, andnproteinase 3 are in a cluster located at chromosome 19pter. All 3ngenes are expressed coordinately and their protein products arenpackaged together into azurophil granules during neutrophilndifferentiation.
