- This gene is a member of the kernel lipocalin superfamilynwhose members share relatively low sequence similarity but havenhighly conserved exon/intron structure and three-dimensionalnprotein folding. Most lipocalins are clustered on the long arm ofnchromosome 9. The encoded glycoprotein has been previously referrednto as pregnancy-associated endometrial alpha-2-globulin, placentalnprotein 14, and glycodelin, but has been officially namednprogestagen-associated endometrial protein. Three distinct forms,nwith identical protein backbones but different glycosylationnprofiles, are found in amniotic fluid, follicular fluid and seminalnplasma of the reproductive system. These glycoproteins havendistinct and essential roles in regulating a uterine environmentnsuitable for pregnancy and in the timing and occurrence of thenappropriate sequence of events in the fertilization process. Annumber of alternatively spliced transcript variants have beennobserved at this locus, but the full-length nature of only two,neach encoding the same protein, has been determined.
