- The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the family ofnP-type primary ion transport ATPases characterized by the formationnof an aspartyl phosphate intermediate during the reaction cycle.nThese enzymes remove bivalent calcium ions from eukaryotic cellsnagainst very large concentration gradients and play a critical rolenin intracellular calcium homeostasis. The mammalian plasma membranencalcium ATPase isoforms are encoded by at least four separate genesnand the diversity of these enzymes is further increased bynalternative splicing of transcripts. The expression of differentnisoforms and splice variants is regulated in a developmental,ntissue- and cell type-specific manner, suggesting that these pumpsnare functionally adapted to the physiological needs of particularncells and tissues.
