- This gene encodes a member of the RIEG/PITX homeoboxnfamily, which is in the bicoid class of homeodomain proteins. Thenencoded protein acts as a transcription factor and regulatesnprocollagen lysyl hydroxylase gene expression. This protein plays anrole in the terminal differentiation of somatotroph and lactotrophncell phenotypes, is involved in the development of the eye, toothnand abdominal organs, and acts as a transcriptional regulatorninvolved in basal and hormone-regulated activity of prolactin.nMutations in this gene are associated with Axenfeld-Riegernsyndrome, iridogoniodysgenesis syndrome, and sporadic cases ofnPeters anomaly. A similar protein in other vertebrates is involvednin the determination of left-right asymmetry during development.nAlternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinctnisoforms have been described.
