- This gene encodes a type II transmembrane glycoproteinnbelonging to the M28 peptidase family. The protein acts as anglutamate carboxypeptidase on different alternative substrates,nincluding the nutrient folate and the neuropeptidenN-acetyl-l-aspartyl-l-glutamate and is expressed in a number ofntissues such as prostate, central and peripheral nervous system andnkidney. A mutation in this gene may be associated with impairednintestinal absorption of dietary folates, resulting in low bloodnfolate levels and consequent hyperhomocysteinemia. Expression ofnthis protein in the brain may be involved in a number ofnpathological conditions associated with glutamate excitotoxicity.nIn the prostate the protein is up-regulated in cancerous cells andnis used as an effective diagnostic and prognostic indicator ofnprostate cancer. This gene likely arose from a duplication event ofna nearby chromosomal region. Alternative splicing gives rise tonmultiple transcript variants encoding several different isoforms.
