- Proper cohesion of sister chromatids is a prerequisite fornthe correct segregation of chromosomes during cell division. Thencohesin multiprotein complex is required for sister chromatidncohesion. This complex is composed partly of two structuralnmaintenance of chromosomes (SMC) proteins, SMC3 and either SMC1L2nor the protein encoded by this gene. Most of the cohesin complexesndissociate from the chromosomes before mitosis, although thosencomplexes at the kinetochore remain. Therefore, the encoded proteinnis thought to be an important part of functional kinetochores. Innaddition, this protein interacts with BRCA1 and is phosphorylatednby ATM, indicating a potential role for this protein in DNA repair.nThis gene, which belongs to the SMC gene family, is located in annarea of the X-chromosome that escapes X inactivation.
