- This gene encodes a member of the AP-2 family ofntranscription factors. AP-2 proteins form homo- or hetero-dimersnwith other AP-2 family members and bind specific DNA sequences.nThey are thought to stimulate cell proliferation and suppressnterminal differentiation of specific cell types during embryonicndevelopment. Specific AP-2 family members differ in theirnexpression patterns and binding affinity for different promoters.nThis protein functions as both a transcriptional activator andnrepressor. Mutations in this gene result in autosomal dominant Charnsyndrome, suggesting that this gene functions in thendifferentiation of neural crest cell derivatives. [provided bynRefSeq].
