- Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are a large family of zincnmetalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbonndioxide. They participate in a variety of biological processes,nincluding respiration, calcification, acid-base balance, bonenresorption, and the formation of aqueous humor, cerebrospinalnfluid, saliva, and gastric acid. They show extensive diversity inntissue distribution and in their subcellular localization. CA1 isnclosely linked to CA2 and CA3 genes on chromosome 8, and it encodesna cytosolic protein which is found at the highest level innerythrocytes. Variants of this gene have been described in somenpopulations. Multiple alternatively spliced variants, encoding thensame protein, have been identified. Transcript variants of CA1nutilizing alternative polyA_sites have been described innliterature.
