- This gene encodes a member of the CCAAT/enhancer-bindingnprotein (C/EBP) family of transcription factors. The proteinnfunctions as a dominant-negative inhibitor by forming heterodimersnwith other C/EBP members, such as C/EBP and LAP (liver activatornprotein), and preventing their DNA binding activity. The protein isnimplicated in adipogenesis and erythropoiesis, is activated bynendoplasmic reticulum stress, and promotes apoptosis. Fusion ofnthis gene and FUS on chromosome 16 or EWSR1 on chromosome 22ninduced by translocation generates chimeric proteins in myxoidnliposarcomas or Ewing sarcoma. Multiple alternatively splicedntranscript variants encoding two isoforms with different lengthnhave been identified.
