- This gene is a member of the type IV, cyclic AMPn(cAMP)-specific, cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) family.nCyclic nucleotides are important second messengers that regulatenand mediate a number of cellular responses to extracellularnsignals, such as hormones, light, and neurotransmitters. The cyclicnnucleotide phosphodiesterases (PDEs) regulate the cellularnconcentrations of cyclic nucleotides and thereby play a role innsignal transduction. This gene encodes a protein that specificallynhydrolyzes cAMP. Altered activity of this protein has beennassociated with schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder.nAlternate transcriptional splice variants, encoding differentnisoforms, have been characterized.
