- The correlation of anti-sperm antibodies with cases ofnunexplained infertility implicates a role for these antibodies innblocking fertilization. Improved diagnosis and treatment ofnimmunologic infertility, as well as identification of proteins forntargeted contraception, are dependent on the identification andncharacterization of relevant sperm antigens. The protein expressednby this gene is recognized by anti-sperm antibodies from infertilenmales. Furthermore, antibodies generated against the recombinantnprotein block in vitro fertilization. This protein localizes to thenacrosomal membrane of spermatids and mature spermatozoa where it isnthought to play a role in acrosomal morphogenesis and in sperm-eggnbinding and fusion, respectively.
