- NCALD encodes a member of the neuronal calcium sensorn(NCS) family of calcium-binding proteins. The protein contains annN-terminal myristoylation signal and four EF-hand calcium bindingnloops. The protein is cytosolic at resting calcium levels; however,nelevated intracellular calcium levels induce a conformationalnchange that exposes the myristoyl group, resulting in proteinnassociation with membranes and partial co-localization with thenperinuclear trans-golgi network. The protein is thought to be anregulator of G protein-coupled receptor signal transduction.nSeveral alternatively spliced variants of this gene have beenndetermined, all of which encode the same protein; additionalnvariants may exist but their biological validity has not beenndetermined.
