This gene encodes a cytokine that functions inninflammation and the maturation of B cells. The protein isnprimarily produced at sites of acute and chronic inflammation,nwhere it is secreted into the serum and induces a transcriptionalninflammatory response through interleukin 6 receptor, alpha. Thenfunctioning of this gene is implicated in a wide variety ofninflammation-associated disease states, including suspectibility tondiabetes mellitus and systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
