The protein encoded by this gene is a transmembranenendopeptidase that belongs to the type II integral membranenzinc-dependent endopeptidase family. The protein is thought to beninvolved in bone and dentin mineralization and renal phosphatenreabsorption. Mutations in this gene cause X-linkednhypophosphatemic rickets.
