This gene encodes a member of the SOX (SRY-relatednHMG-box) family of transcription factors involved in the regulationnof embryonic development and in the determination of the cell fate.nThe encoded protein may act as a transcriptional activator afternforming a protein complex with other proteins. This protein may beninvolved in brain development and function. Haploinsufficiency fornthis protein may contribute to the mental retardation found innhaemoglobin H-related mental retardation (ART-16 syndrome).
