The protein encoded by this gene is proteolyticallynprocessed to release a secreted peptide termed endothelin 1. Thisnpeptide is a potent vasoconstrictor and is produced by vascularnendothelial cells. Endothelin 1 also can affect the central nervousnsystem. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms havenbeen found for this gene.
