The protein encoded by this gene, a member of the Gnprotein-coupled receptor family 1, is an integral plasma membranenprotein which binds melanin-concentrating hormone. The encodednprotein can inhibit cAMP accumulation and stimulate intracellularncalcium flux, and is probably involved in the neuronal regulationnof food consumption. Although structurally similar to somatostatinnreceptors, this protein does not seem to bind somatostatin.
