The cannabinoid delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is thenprincipal psychoactive ingredient of marijuana. The proteinsnencoded by this gene and the cannabinoid receptor 1 (brain) (CNR1)ngene have the characteristics of a guanine nucleotide-bindingnprotein (G-protein)-coupled receptor for cannabinoids. They inhibitnadenylate cyclase activity in a dose-dependent, stereoselective, nand pertussis toxin-sensitive manner. These proteins have beennfound to be involved in the cannabinoid-induced CNS effectsn(including alterations in mood and cognition) experienced by usersnof marijuana. The cannabinoid receptors are members of family 1 ofnthe G-protein-coupled receptors.
