Cellular calcium signaling is controlled by the productionnof inositol phosphates (IPs) by phospholipase C in response tonextracellular signals. The IP signaling molecules are inactivatednby a family of inositol polyphosphate-5-phosphatasesn(5-phosphatases). INPP5B encodes the type II 5-phosphatase. Thenprotein is localized to the cytosol and mitochondria, andnassociates with membranes through an isoprenyl modification nearnthe C-terminus. Several alternatively spliced transcript variantsnof this gene have been described, but the full-length nature ofnsome of these variants has not been determined. [provided bynRefSeq].
