This gene encodes a member of the cysteine-aspartic acidnprotease (caspase) family. Sequential activation of caspases playsna central role in the execution-phase of cell apoptosis. Caspasesnexist as inactive proenzymes which undergo proteolytic processingnat conserved aspartic residues to produce two subunits, large andnsmall, that dimerize to form the active enzyme. Overexpression ofnthe active form of this enzyme induces apoptosis in fibroblasts.nMax, a central component of the Myc/Max/Mad transcriptionnregulation network important for cell growth, differentiation, andnapoptosis, is cleaved by this protein; this process requiresnFas-mediated dephosphorylation of Max. The expression of this genenis regulated by interferon-gamma and lipopolysaccharide.nAlternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified fornthis gene.
