This gene encodes a selenoprotein, which contains anselenocysteine (Sec) residue at its active site. The selenocysteinenis encoded by the UGA codon that normally signals translationntermination. The 3' UTR of selenoprotein genes have a commonnstem-loop structure, the sec insertion sequence (SECIS), that isnnecessary for the recognition of UGA as a Sec codon rather than asna stop signal. This selenoprotein is localized to the endoplasmicnreticulum and is highly expressed in the heart, where it maynfunction as an antioxidant.
