This gene encodes the peptide hormones calcitonin,ncalcitonin gene-related peptide and katacalcin by tissue-specificnalternative RNA splicing of the gene transcripts and cleavage ofninactive precursor proteins. Calcitonin is involved in calciumnregulation and acts to regulate phosphorus metabolism. Calcitoninngene-related peptide functions as a vasodilator while katacalcin isna calcium-lowering peptide. Multiple transcript variants encodingndifferent isoforms have been found for this gene.
