Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family areninvolved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normalnphysiological processes, such as embryonic development,nreproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in diseasenprocesses, such as arthritis and metastasis. Studies in rhesus monkeys suggestnthat the enzyme is involved in IL-8-induced mobilization ofnhematopoietic progenitor cells from bone marrow, and murine studiesnsuggest a role in tumor-associated tissue remodeling.
