Capsaicin, the main pungent ingredient in hot chilinpeppers, elicits a sensation of burning pain by selectivelynactivating sensory neurons that convey information about noxiousnstimuli to the central nervous system. The protein encoded by thisngene is a receptor for capsaicin and is a non-selective cationnchannel that is structurally related to members of the TRP familynof ion channels. This receptor is also activated by increases inntemperature in the noxious range, suggesting that it functions as antransducer of painful thermal stimuli in vivo. Four transcriptnvariants encoding the same protein, but with different 5' UTRnsequence, have been described for this gene.
