- This gene encodes a protein that was identified in anscreen for genes expressed in metastatic cells, specifically,nmammary adenocarcinoma cell lines. Expression of this gene has beenncorrelated with the metastatic potential of at least two types ofncarcinomas although it is also expressed in many normal tissues.nThe role it plays in metastasis is unclear. It was initiallynthought to be the 70kD component of a nucleosome remodelingndeacetylase complex, NuRD, but it is more likely that thisncomponent is a different but very similar protein. These twonproteins are so closely related, though, that they share the samentypes of domains. These domains include two DNA binding domains, andimerization domain, and a domain commonly found in proteins thatnmethylate DNA. The profile and activity of this gene productnsuggest that it is involved in regulating transcription and thatnthis may be accomplished by chromatin remodeling. [provided bynRefSeq].
