The protein encoded by this gene is a member of thensuperfamily of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters. ABCnproteins transport various molecules across extra- andnintra-cellular membranes. ABC genes are divided into seven distinctnsubfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White). Thisnprotein is a member of the MRP subfamily which is involved innmulti-drug resistance. The specific function of this protein hasnnot yet been determined; however, this protein may play a role innthe transport of biliary and intestinal excretion of organicnanions. Alternatively spliced variants which encode differentnprotein isoforms have been described; however, not all variantsnhave been fully characterized.
