This gene encodes a member of the lysyl oxidase genenfamily. The prototypic member of the family is essential to thenbiogenesis of connective tissue, encoding an extracellularncopper-dependent amine oxidase that catalyses the first step in thenformation of crosslinks in collagens and elastin. A highlynconserved amino acid sequence at the C-terminus end appears to bensufficient for amine oxidase activity, suggesting that each familynmember may retain this function. The N-terminus is poorly conservednand may impart additional roles in developmental regulation, nsenescence, tumor suppression, cell growth control, and chemotaxisnto each member of the family.
