DEAD box proteins, characterized by the conserved motifnAsp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), are putative RNA helicases. They arenimplicated in a number of cellular processes involving alterationnof RNA secondary structure such as translation initiation, nuclearnand mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly.nBased on their distribution patterns, some members of this DEAD boxnprotein family are believed to be involved in embryogenesis,nspermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division. This genenencodes a member of this family. The encoded protein has 97%nsequence identity with the mouse HELG protein. Alternativelynspliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have beennfound for this gene.
